You only need three things to be an functional producer: a cell phone, an e-mail address and a stack of business cards. For now my name is on the business cards, but if my goal is to set up a real VFX house, I’ll need a name for that house. And with a name, comes a signature design. Two issues should be dealt with early in a start-up timeline: finding the Company name and the Company signature branding. That way when you’re talking to bankers or investors, you’re not pitching for “you know, that project I’m working on…”. It just sounds right with a name.
At least it does not require a huge effort, just a bit of brainstorming. In my case it’s not settled yet, but a designer is already at work on the logo and signature, based on what the Company will be about. I never wanted to try designing the logo myself. The process should be simple yet effective, so it’s better to leave it to a professional. I’m lucky: Seth Godin agrees with me. As for the Company name… well, it’s almost ready.
